April 30th, 2008 by Louie b. Free

I interviewed SQuire Rushnell a few years back when his book : When God Winks-How the Power of Coincidence Guides Your Life. This is a bit of what SQuire says about God Winks:

You’ve had another one of those days. Everything seems uncertain.

Who could you talk to about this? Bigger question, who’d listen?

Tentatively your eyes drift skyward.

*Hello? Are you there, God?

Then your mind quickly assesses the immensity of your request. You want God to listen to you, right now. How ridiculous. ...

At a time when bad news about the environment was splashed across newspapers from coast to coast, freelance writer John Javna decided to write a book to empower the average citizen in the fight to save the environment. Against all odds, his little, self-published book made its way into the world, onto the NYT bestseller list, and helped launch a green revolution…ultimately selling millions of copies.

And, updates on AG Danngate....

Wed :

we close the show w/:

A live update w/ The Columbus Dispatch's Alan Johnson re: The Ohio Atty.General's office-

we begin talking Democrats and China policy w/ /the alliance for American Mfg:
Democratic Presidential Candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama vowed to hold China and other offending countries accountable for unfair trade practices that disadvantage U.S. workers and manufacturers at a candidate forum this morning in Pittsburgh. Senator John McCain was invited but unable to attend.

The forum was sponsored by the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), a non-partisan, non-profit labor-management coalition of the United Steelworkers and the nation’s leading manufacturers forged to strengthen manufacturing in America.

“Today, voters demanded that their presidential candidates get tough on China,” said AAM Executive Director Scott Paul. “And while the candidates at today’s forum made strong commitments on trade, we must ensure that their promises become policies that enforce our laws against unfair trade and defend our workers and domestic industries.”

The candidates appeared separately. Each spoke for 20 minutes on trade and manufacturing issues before fielding several questions from the diverse audience of over 1,600 union workers, manufacturers, and local elected officials. AAM principals and partners also addressed the crowd, including United Steelworkers International President Leo W. Gerard, United States Steel Corporation Senior Vice President Terrence Straub, Allegheny Technologies Chief Executive Patrick Hassey and AK Steel Chief Executive Jim Wainscott.

“China must stop manipulating its currency because it’s not fair to American manufacturers, it’s not fair to you, and we are going to change it when I am President,” said Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) in his remarks to forum attendees, where he also criticized trade agreements like NAFTA. He pledged to “fight for manufacturing, modernize the steel industry, strengthen our manufacturing base, and have a manufacturing policy to open as many markets as we can for American workers.”

“I’m calling for changing our laws to send China a message,” said Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), who outlined her trade agenda to the audience and highlighted national security concerns related to unfair trade. “If you subsidize your exports and hurt our manufacturers, you’ll pay a price.” She argued that “you cannot be a strong nation without a strong manufacturing sector.”

The candidate forum is part of a larger effort by AAM to highlight the impact that China’s unfair trade practices have had on American workers and manufacturers. AAM has called for stronger enforcement of U.S. trade law and last week launched a statewide advertisement and grassroots campaign entitled, “China Cheats. Pennsylvania Loses.” A PDF of the ad is posted at: http://www.americanmanufacturing.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/aam_pennsylvania_032708a.pdf

The study of sexual physiology—what happens, and why, and how to make it happen better—has been going on for centuries, behind the closed doors of laboratories, brothels, Alfred Kinsey's attic, and, more recently, MRI centers, pig farms, and sex-toy R&D labs. I spent two years wheedling and conniving my way behind those doors to bring you the answers to the questions Dr. Ruth never asked. Is your penis three inches longer than you think? Is vaginal orgasm a myth? Can a dead man get an erection? Why doesn't Viagra help women—or, for that matter, pandas?

DIRECTOR TERRY J. COLLINS

Youngstown Prosecutor Jay Macejko returns to the show-FRESH from a training session and ready to implement Operation Ceasefire in the community. First stop — the Louie b. Free Show to share what he learned, his hopes and target dates. Operation Ceasefire is a deterrence police strategy to reduce gang violence, illegal gun possession, and gun violence in communities. The program's creator, Professor David Kennedy, will also join the conversation.

Louie will also talk with Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray, who is coming to the Valley with information on the Youngstown-area businesses taking part in his GrowNOW interest rate reduction program, how they’re being helped, and the dollars and jobs this means for the area. Cordray pledged last year to help area businesses access the program, which had been underutilized. He'll join the show after visiting Summer Garden Food Manufacturing, which has just become involved in the GrowNOW program.

Also returning will be Benjamin R. Barber, author of "CONSUMED — How Markets Corrupt Children, Infantilize Adults, and Swallow Citizens Whole." Barber focuses on the expanding global culture of market forces he claims will destroy not only democracy but even capitalism, if left unchecked. Those forces, he believes, seek to turn the young into aggressive consumers and arrest the psychological development of adultsleading them to "stupid" brand loyalties. The increasing drive toward privatization compounds the problem, he believes, generating a "civic schizophrenia" where everybody wants service but nobody wants to serve.

Th.03.April.08

www.44503live.blogspot.com for Phil Kidd's blog-a true example of transparency in government.

Former Ohio State Senator, Harry Meshel returns to rock and roll with me today.

Harry Meshel

Sen. Meshel's unique perspectives on politics — local, state and national — are always interesting and entertaining. Louie says, if we're lucky, he'll get the senator to sing again!

Meshel entered electoral politics in 1970, when he ran for a seat in the Ohio State Senate. In 1971, he was elected to the 33rd District seat, then was re-elected five times. He became the Senate's majority whip and chaired the powerful Senate Finance Committee.

During his five terms, he was credited with helping to secure almost $150 million in capital improvements for Youngstown State University. He also secured more than $160 million in grants and loans from the Ohio Department of Development for local economic development projects and worked to create the Northeastern Universities College of Medicine, the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University , the Wright State University School of Professional psychology, and other programs.

Louie also will talk whole-grain cooking and eating the Betty Crocker folks. Their new cookbook is Betty Crocker Whole Grains.

And he'll discuss addiction treatment/services with Larry Moliterno, Boardman Township trustee and CEO of Meridian Services, Inc., a behavioral healthcare organization.

Moliterno has been named to the board of directors of the Ohio Council of Behavioral Healthcare Providers.

02.April.08-Wed.

MARK PEYKO from METRO MONTHLY

I've read an advance copy of that little pink book that makes politicians squirm.

The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) will release the 2008 Congressional Pig Book at a news conference Wednesday. Louie has and has read an advance copy. But Louie's read it and will talk with Thomas A. Schatz, president of the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste, on today's "Brainfood From the Heartland."

The Pig Book is an annual report on pork-barrel spending in the federal budget. This year's version features a complete database of pork projects and profiles of the most egregious examples from the federal Appropriations Acts. In fiscal 2008, pork-barrel spending ballooned to 11,610 projects costing $17.2 billion.

Louie will lead a discussion of the current state of earmark reform and what more needs to be done to stop Congress from returning to its piggish ways.

He'll also welcome Dr.Hyla Cass back to the show. She's one of the country's foremost authors and speakers on the subject of integrative medicine. A former assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA School of Medicine, she has incorporated nutrition and natural health techniques into her practice for more than 20 years.

She'll talk about her new book : Supplement Your Prescription; What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutrition.

The Approach: Urgency, Optimism and Entrepreneurship

Earth: The Sequel sends out an urgent call to arms. But it in sharp contrast to most of who you’ll read about global warming, this is a call filled with abundant optimism. The men and women it profiles are already transforming the energy sector, showing the best of America’s entrepreneurial spirit. They are to paving a way, once again, for the United States to lead the world out of crisis.

AND, our friends from FRONTLINE return .
n June 2007, as the American military surge reached its peak, a band of National Guard infantrymen who call themselves the "Bad Voodoo Platoon" was deployed to Iraq. To capture a vivid, first-person account of the new realities of war in Iraq for FRONTLINE and ITVS director Deborah Scranton (The War Tapes) created a "virtual embed" with the platoon, supplying cameras to the soldiers so they could record and tell the story of their war. The film intimately tracks the veteran soldiers of "Bad Voodoo" through the daily grind of their perilous mission, dodging deadly IEDs, grappling with the political complexities of dealing with Iraqi security forces, and battling their fatigue and their fears.
Louie will talk w/ Deborah Scranton today.

Jesus Rode a Donkey-Dr.Linda Seger-Why Republicans Don't Have the Corner on Christ

Jesus Rode a Donkey shines the light of Scripture and theology on policy decisions of both the Republican and Democratic party, and looks at the many ways that, I believe, the Republican party has lost its way -- by giving more tax breaks to the super-rich than the poor, by cutting back on environmental policies that protect the environment, by not caring for the poor, the needy, the have-nots in our society, by fueling the war rather than creating peace, by creating an attitude of fear rather than hope, by not being honest with the American people

Confessions of a Political Hitman
Written by Stephen Marks

While many fine book about politics have been written by campaign mangers [such as George Stephonopoulous] and pollsters [such as Dick Morris] never before has a book been written for the American mainstream by a “political hitman”, the shadowy figures used in all campaigns to dig up dirt on the political opposition.

ALSO

When the city first announced that Youngstown was going to utilize Operation Cease Fire — a coordinated, citywide strategy aimed at deterring juvenile and gang firearm violence, I contacted local officials to come on the show and explain the program and promote its use in our community. Frustrated with the lack of response from city officials, I then contacted David Kennedy. David joins us today. He directed the Boston Gun Project, a ground-breaking problem-solving policing exercise aimed at serious youth violence. Its chief intervention, Operation Ceasefire, was implemented in mid-1996 and appears to have been principally responsible for a two-thirds reduction in homicide victimization among those 24 and under citywide. Operation Ceasefire won the Ford Foundation Innovations in Government award, the Herman Goldstein International Award for Problem Oriented Policing, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police Webster Seavey Award. He has contributed to similar homicide prevention exercises in San Francisco, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, High Point and Winston-Salem, North Carolina, San Joaquin County, California, and elsewhere. He helped design the Youth Crime Gun Interdiction Initiative, launched by the Clinton Administration in 1996, for which he received a director's commendation from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

and, we'll welcome the girls from Valley24.com, Katie Libecco and Sarah Poulton, for a round-table discussion with V24 fans, dentist Dr. Amber Ausnehmer, Sheila the teacher, and Janko from the I Will Shout Youngstown blog.

Ohio’s autism voucher provides up to $20,000 a year to parents of children with autism. Families can use this voucher at private schools and agencies approved by the Ohio Department of Education. A new study by Policy Matters found that just 40 of the 127 approved private providers that filed claims for payment under Ohio’s autism voucher program in the first quarter of fiscal year 2008 offered a school setting. Of these 40, only three did not limit or discourage enrollment by at least one of three criteria: degree of disability, cost, or religious belief.
